Excited to Launch Kings Hill Outfitters

This is the first blog post of Kings Hill Outfitters, February 6th, 2021. I’m Rick Peterson and I spend a lot of time on the ranch.  It’s a cold windy day here in central Nebraska.  We had about 4” of really light fluffy snow last night and the north wind is blowing it around a little today.  The temperature has risen from the low of 12 last night to 15 at noon today.  I’ll hit the hills of the ranch for a few hours this afternoon, as I expect a lot of deer to be in East pasture.  They’ll be ready to move in this afternoon to hit the ensilage pit at dark, and they’ll be scattered through the cornfields as well since they need energy with the cold spell that just hit.  The weather is supposed to be cold for at least the next week with today’s high of 15 degrees being the warmest for the week.

I went out for a long three-hour walk with Ellie, my yellow lab last weekend, mainly in three different pastures, and saw quite a few mule deer, usually in groups of 8-15.  I saw quite a few smaller mule deer bucks and two nice bucks, both around 150’.  I didn’t really get into the location of the whitetails on the ranch but did see a smaller 5 x 5 whitetail buck with a couple of does.  I saw two coyotes hunting hard as at this point in the winter they are searching hard for food.  I really should get out and call them and take care of them as I’m seeing quite a few coyotes on the ranch since the mange outbreak has lightened up.
